Dogs and well-behaved owners welcome at Coach and Horses, Bolton by Bowland

As I sit sipping my Four Mice "Goldie" ale on the beckside terrace of the Coach and Horses, Bolton-by-Bowland, my mind strays back to the Wars of the Roses.

In 1464 poor, doomed Henry VI, defeated in battle, pursued by the Yorkists and close to losing both his kingdom and his mind, sought sanctuary at nearby Bolton Hall, home to one of his few remaining champions, Sir Ralph Pudsey.

Miracles were attributed to Henry, both in his lifetime and after. One of his more attributable skills was dowsing. And here’s the link to the rapidly disappearing pint in my hand. The Coach’s in-house micro-brewery uses water from King Henry’s Well, based on a natural spring discovered by the King on the old Bolton estate.

Taking place at the Orangeraie at Stanley House Hotel & Spa, the Lancashire Tourism Awards played host to almost 400 attendees, with 17 awards given out by Blackburn-born comedian Tez Ilyas.

The challenges of the last two years prompted the inclusion of a new Resilience and Innovation Award, which was presented to Inch Perfect Trials by Lancashire Director of Public Health Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, who became a familiar face during the pandemic. The unsung hero award, recognising the work of individuals or groups throughout the pandemic was presented to Glen Duckett of the Eagle & Child and Eat Grow Thrive.

The Perfect Stay category recognised small hotels as well as bed & breakfasts and guest houses providing truly memorable guest experiences and demonstrating excellence across every aspect of the business.
