The remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1148, set against a backdrop of dramatic hills. After its dissolution in 1536, the monks were briefly returned to the abbey during the Pilgrimage of Grace. They remained in possession until the insurrection's collapse and the execution of their abbot.
We are within half an hour of a number of market towns, Skipton, Settle and Clitheroe with plenty of shopping to be had. Clitheroe should be at the top of your list of places to explore, overlooked by an impressive 12th century castle. D Byrnes wines, Cowman’s famous sausages and the market which opens from 9am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are all worth a visit.
